Kokutsu Dachi

Probably the hardest karate stance is kokutsu-dachi (back stance). Here is a picture of our resident international instructor, Andre Bertel Sensei (6th Dan), performing his strong kokutsu-dachi.

The key point for all stances is to master the form as best you can, but with kumite always in mind. It doesn't matter if your stance looks nice or not, what matters is that you have the correct form, balance, power and zanshin.

Like all techniques, stances are only useful when practically trained.

Christchurch Asai Shihan Memorial: IJKA Shotokan Karate New Zealand

Five years ago, Syuseki-Shihan Tetsuhiko Asai (10th Dan) the founder of our dojo and organisation New Zealand passed away.

++++++++++

Once again we held the official New Zealand annual Asai Sensei Memorial in Christchurch which was a great opportunity to pay our respects. The training was hard but enjoyed by all, even though a number of people were absent due to the delays from the snow.

There is a report and video on Andre Sensei's blog: http://andrebertel.blogspot.com/2011/08/5th-asai-sensei-memorial-ijka-new_24.html

THE 3 K'S

Kata is the most important form of training in karate-do, it is the origin of each styles kihon and contains the applications for kumite. This is why the Shotokan classes at the CPIT always include all three aspects, the 3 K's (Kihon, Kata & Kumite). Kihon is kata and kumite, kata is kihon and kumite, & kumite is kihon and kata. However, we should never forget that the origin of everything is Kata.

Lyall Stone Sensei: Tameshiwari Video

ANOTHER VIDEO FROM ASAI-JKA NEW ZEALAND FROM 10+ YEARS AGO

Club Video Footage: Andre Bertel Sensei (Between the years of 2000 & 2003)

Andre Bertel Sensei (6th Dan) was our national chief instructor until he returned to Japan to live early in 2007, at which time he handed over the club to me. Currently he is back living here in Christchurch, but regardless of his former position, he comes to the club as a member and technical supporter, and never fails to call me "Sensei" in the dojo. This really displays his karate spirit, and for those who know him well, it is typical of Andre Sensei. Saying that training has always been his priority is an understatement. The positions he has held have always been bestowed upon him, directly from Syuseki Shihan Tetsuhiko Asai, he never sought power by means of politics, the positions came from his intense training. His attitude now is reflective of that spirit, and has never changed since I've known him. OSS!

Preserving Asai Shihan's Martial Arts Kata

Did you know that our Shuseki Shihan Tetsuhiko Asai (10th Dan IJKA), our late chief instructor, taught five natural element kata. The first of these is amongst the standard 31 kata, which you will know as Unsu (Kumo no te). The other four are Kashu (Hi no te), Roshu (Nami no te), Hushu (Kaze no te) and Suishu (Mizu no te). These kata take one's karate TO THE EXTREME when they are taught properly as Asai Shihan intended. Our dojo works hard to preserve Shihan's Martial Arts Kata precisely as he taught them to us through the 90's until his passing away in 2006. This is a key mission of IJKA New Zealand and the Christchurch Shotokan Karatedo Club.

Ichigeki-Hissatsu

True karate is martial art where single techniques are trained to indefinitely finish the opponent. Ichigeki-hissatsu means that the entire body must be used, especially the legs and waist. This power is generated initially from the ground, the drive of the legs and rotation of the hips. Of course there is more to it than this, but this is where all techniques start, so please keep this in mind when practicing. Always remember, karate is not sports, it is budo (martial arts) so unlike sports karate, kihon, kata and kumite are the same.

CHRISTCHURCH SHOTOKAN KARATE CLUB - CHIEF INSTRUCTOR PROFILE: Lyall Stone Sensei

Lyall Stone Sensei (4th Dan) has trained for decades in the art of karate-do. Through the 1990's he was a senior member of the Japan Karate Association of Canterbury in Christchurch City(affiliated directly to the J.K.A through Shuseki-Shihan Tetsuhiko Asai). His strong backing in JKA Shotokan combined by his "hands on experience" as a security professional certainly form a vast gulf between his teaching and modern sports karate! In his own words he explains "Karate is not a game, it is a martial art of self-protection. Traditional Shotokan kihon, kata and kumite must collectively work together resulting in the ability to finish one's opponents, otherwise it is nothing more than a childish game. This was the bujutsu karate we learned from Asai Sensei and the other J.K.A instructors". Lyall Sensei at the helm of the Christchurch Shotokan Karate Club ensures that karate remains in it traditional form, as bujutsu (an effective MARTIAL ART)."Unlike the other Shotokan clubs in Christchurch we don't bounce around trying to score points, do gymnastics, or just try to look nice doing kihon and kata. And we are not a babysitting club, we offer real true Shotokan karate, and we are the only one's who do so in the Canterbury region. The standards of Shotokan karate in Christchurch are terrible, so our club exists to provide Cantabrian's with the option of learning the real thing. Those who want to learn Shotokan properly will seek, find and be welcomed. OSS!" - Lyall Stone Sensei.

________

Favourite kata: Presently Meikyo-shodan, Meikyo-nidan & Meikyo-sandan. Also Tekki-sandan.

Most important kata: Besides Heian and Tekki for fundamentals, Junro 1-5 and Kibaken 1-5 for kumite.

Favourite techniques: Presently kaiten uraken-uchi, yoko-keage, oi-zuki, gyaku-zuki, shuto-uke, & kani-basami.

Favourite kumite techniques: "Anything that ends the conflict indefinitely..."

Teaching philosophy: "Patience with my students means they will grow at their own pace, and keep good health. However, even though we are in New Zealand, the standard is never lowered from that of the J.K.A and I.J.K.A as set by Asai Shihan".
